Our spies just caught the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon diesel mule for the first time testing in the desert! It was spotted alongside a caravan of RAM 2500 HDs with the 6.7 Cummins turbodiesel.

The Rubicon mule underbody shots shows a DEF tank for the diesel's emissions system equipped its own skid plate. This provides yet another indication that the 2018 Wrangler will offer a diesel engine option in North America, which is all but assured to have the 3.0-liter VM V6 diesel engine expected to be paired with the 8HP75 transmission.

Other details seen under the body of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler reaffirm that it will retain the JK Wrangler's solid axles (Dana 44 axles) suspension setup. The JL Rubicon is also sure to receive beefier axles and tires.

I was hoping to see some more of the JL body but it's good to see the diesel confirmed for the states.

Yea great to see it confirmed via DEF tank but weird that they're testing it now for a release 4 years from now. Still don't get that late timing.

Didn't the new 8 speed auto need an elongated hood or something to fit it? This is just the current JK body, so that means the 8 speed doesnt need a longer hood?

A turbo diesel is finally happening! This is going to be hugely popular and cant wait to get my hands on one.

Also, interesting tire size (285/70 17"). More than one mule spotted with this new tire size now so this might be the sizing we're looking at for the JL.

I've been waiting a long time too. The government seems to be souring on diesels and I don't know if it has much of a future 10 years from now, but let's get this diesel JL Wrangler out soon so I can pick one up and keep it forever :)

Why would they ruin the Diesel with DEF?? It's unreliable, cuts power down, can neg impact MPG and just another thing to buy when getting fuel. Also for people in colder climates just another fluid to worry about freezing.

I'm not familiar with current diesel emissions standards, but maybe it's requires going forward to comply with EPA since DEF helps break down a Diesel engine's harmful nitrogen oxide emissions into harmless nitrogen and water.

I don't think I'll buy a gas engine when I buy a JL. I can wait for the diesel. Plus, I already own a diesel pickup.

A lot of pent up demand for the diesel in the states. Since the 3.6L is going to basically carry over and I see the 4 cyl as mainly for the mass public commuters, the diesel is the main draw. Just wish we didn't have to wait 2 more years for it (based on that powerpoint that was leaked).
