Adjustable control arm (for small lifts) or armS (for taller lifts) is the best for off road because cams can move.
The control arm drop bracts work good also, but don't offer as precise adjustment.

This is the issue. As has been said, it is dependent on shock length. Any 3-3.5" lift will be fine around the street as long as you don't go jumping into parking lots, but will tear the boot if the axle travels to far down.
