I have really been wondering. Has anybody actually broken their axle tube there? and if so, what in the world were they doing?!?!
yes I have seen photos and just offroading......when I look at mine it makes me nervous. looks like a prime place to break.

I’ve seen a couple failures. One was forced off the road by oncoming traffic and it snapped right at the FAD housing. Others, I have no idea.

It’s a weak point for sure, but it doesn’t mean it’s ever going to be a problem for you. Too much skinny pedal and bouncing hard off road can break a lot of things, so I would imagine it would need to be the perfect storm for the FAD to go first, but I truly don’t know.

If I make the decision to stick with my OEM axles, I’ll probably truss them at some point and never give it a second thought.

Do they all have CV joints now? I was thinking those were still only on rigs with 4-auto.
I thought they were CV joints too, with the boots and all. According to these pics from Mopar, they are still Universal joints but covered by a boot. This sure looks like a universal joint to me.

Two different part numbers. They are showing the two different applications.
One is the CV shaft the other is the UJont shaft.

That makes sense, nice you can still use universal joints if you want. I know a lot of people were complaining about the CV joints.

That's quite odd to me. What would the point of a boot be over a standard U-joint?
Keep it dry. If this is in fact how it is I like it! Someone will have to tear one apart, so we know for sure. I know you can buy aftermarket CV axles from RCV but there like $1800.00 / set.

The diagram in the box is just the alternate unit. They have simply used the Mopar diagram, that would have listed the 2 separate part numbers, for use in this add. The diagram would show a cut away of the boot over the U joint …
You missed this statement.

So, what is under the boot CV or universal joint? I think #1 shows assembly and inside box numbers 3-7 are separate parts. See link to part numbers below.

The CV is only sold as a complete unit (ball bearings in a carrier) you cannot buy rebuild parts so they are not listed or shown as a breakaway . The diagram states “Part can be found as reference #1 in illustration”. I think that’s pretty clear. The UJoint shaft is referenced as #2.

Good to know you can run either.

heck you can push on the boot and while it is pretty stiff it still will push in enough to tell it is not a u joint.

based on the illustrations it looks like there is no coupling which is good.

Unfortunately that’s just the Left side axle. I have not seen any diagrams from Mopar yet showing a one piece Right side axle. I would love to get a factory Mopar 1 piece CV axle for the Right side.
Back a couple years ago when I first started looking for a FAD alternative I was hoping the 392 would have had a one piece shaft but alas they simply put in a lock plate that holds the lock ring engaging the 2 piece shaft.
